Sihanoukville Beach Guide

When daydreaming about Cambodia, visions of beautiful beaches may not be on the forefront of most people's minds. While the temples definitely take center stage as the country's main attraction, the beaches along the Southern coast are totally worth the trip. What was meant to be a three-day holiday turned into a 10-day beach bumming fest that we never wanted to end after seeing all that Sihanoukville has to offer. The town itself isn't a major draw, but once you've found your happy place from the list of beaches below, I think you'll understand why we had such a hard time pulling ourselves away.

Victory Beach

Located at the bottom of Victory Hill, this beach is the main stop for tourists staying on the Western side of town. Its close proximity to the port doesn't make for the most desirable backdrop, but the surrounding area does have a good range of budget food and accommodation.

A bit further down the coast with Victory Beach still in view, Hawaii Beach is a hot spot for local Khmer tourists.

Independence Beach

Named after the Independence Hotel that sits along the north end, Independence Beach is a 2km stretch of clean sand and clear water. It's among the quieter beaches along the coast, providing a breath of fresh air away from the crowds of the more touristed spots.

There's a small price to pay to enter this private beach, but if you're into well-manicured sand and seclusion, it may be worth the 20 baht entrance fee. Or if you're really looking to splash out, book your stay at the Sokha Beach Resort for an all-access pass to the beach and the resort's other luxe amenities.

Serendipity Beach

While the beach itself only consists of a small stretch of rocks and sand, the real action of Serendipity lies on Serendipity Beach Road. Here you'll find loads of Western-style restaurants, bars and shops galore. This is the place to stay if you're looking to get pissed and party.

Ocheteaul Beach

Just off of Serendipity Beach Road, Ocheteaul is Sihanoukville's main tourist beach of the East. With tons of dining and drinking options, it seems like a great spot to be upon arrival, but after a few days of constantly being harassed by hawkers and worrying about your belongings being stolen, you'll start to question how much rest and relaxation you're actually getting on your beach vacation.

Otres Beach

Split into two beaches ~ Otres I and Otres II ~ this slice of coastline is Sihanoukville's goldmine. It's 4km of white sand beaches with all the same features as Ocheteaul without the crowds and pesky hagglers. Beach bungalows line the shore, offering cheap accommodation that literally put the sea at your doorstep and the break between the two beaches provides a little something for everyone. Don't miss the Otres Night Market for live music, unique crafts and good vibes all around.

Otres I is great for music lovers and party people with a number of beach bars pumping out electronic music until the wee hours of the morning. Head to the first bar on the stretch, Otres Corner (pictured above), for the best parties by night and a chilled out, anything goes vibe during the day. As you walk further down the beach, you'll find just about any type of cuisine you can imagine and a massive assortment of water sports and activities.

If you continue along past the last bars and bungalows on Otres I, you'll hit Otres II after about 15 minutes. It's less developed than Otres I so you won't find as many food options, but it's perfect for those looking to sleep near the beach without the added noise of a party every night.

Islands

For those looking for even more seclusion, a visit to one of the many islands off Sihanoukville's coast could make for a nice stop off. We scoped out a few of them on a snorkeling day trip and I would love to go back for a more extended stay. A lot of people we met on the trip ended up staying on ultra-untouched Koh Ta Kiev for months, pitching tents or hanging their hammocks wherever they felt was right for the night. Others opted to stay at the awesome treehouse-themed Ten103 to unplug from the rest of the world and become one with nature.
