A few days ago I came across this article about canyoneering, or canyoning as it's referred to outside of the US,  and was awestruck by the photos of people rappelling sky-high waterfalls in the gorgeous gulches of Oahu.

On a trip to New Zealand three years ago, I took a stab at canyoning myself with a few friends from my study abroad program in Australia. With the help of professional canyonators from Canyoning.co.nz, we zip-lined, climbed and cascaded our way down a canyon in the famous Routeburn Valley. Because it incorporates so many different aspects of adventure (rock climbing! abseiling! hiking!), canyoning still stands out as the most physically demanding extreme sport I've ever attempted. The canyon we descended wasn't as steep or tall as the ones Kitt Turner and his team tackle, but we were still completely wiped out by the end of our 3 hour trip.

For a better look at what the sport is all about, check out this video I put together from clips and photos the film crew took on our adventure.
