No matter what city I'm in, I'm always on the hunt for knockout street art. A pop of color. A quote that brightens my day. A political statement that makes me think. Street art offers these things without asking for much in return ~ all it demands is your attention.

In New York City, these works of urban art are found at every corner from Brooklyn to the Bronx and everywhere in between. A medium that was once banned and battled over by artists vs. politicians, street art has now made its way into mainstream culture and is celebrated throughout the city. Artists from all over the world flock to New York to spread their works, making it a street art mecca for today's urban artists.

Evolved from the days of gang-related tags, street art is found in a vast array of forms, such as stencil graffiti, sticker art, sculptures or street installations. While aesthetics are extremely important, many artists use street art as a platform to promote a political ideology or to make a social statement.

And sometimes it's just there to spruce up the streets.

Normally I like to stumble upon urban art on my own ~ the meaning behind the work usually speaks louder to me when its encountered at random ~ but if you need some help scouting it out, you can join a New York graffiti and street art tour. These types of tours are on the rise and are offered in many major street art cities from Rio to London.

You could also create your own tour with the help of the Geo Street Art app. I love the idea of this because it provides context to the works that you're seeing and identifies the artists while also showing you exactly where to go to find the art that you're looking for.

Or how cool is this? If you're sick of all the ads on the underground, just pull up the NO AD app on your phone and it will instantly swap out ads for similarly shaped street art. If you want it to be, art can literally be everywhere.
