Dope Digs: Indigo on Otres

Throughout our 10 day trip to the beaches of Sihanoukville, we stayed at a number of places, but none stood out like Indigo on Otres. After exhausting all of the food options on Otres II, we headed to Otres I for a bite one afternoon and decided that Indigo looked like a fun spot with all of its bright purple, aqua and indigo décor.

Our lunch turned into an entire day of drinking beers and chatting away with Wil and Vicky, a California-native and English woman who manage the bar/restaurant. They offered us a good price for Indigo's #1 bungalow that opens directly to the beach, and early the next day we settled into our home away from home for nearly a week.

It took a little while to get used to the sounds of the night and the creepy crawlies that would make their way in through the palm-thatched roof and walls, but there was something so serene about always hearing the sounds of the sea, and our mozzie net proved to be a good barrier against any intruders. I loved opening our cute purple shutters each morning and watching as Casey ran into the water, welcoming the day with a splash that felt as warm as a bath.

Spending so much time in one place, we got the chance to get to know some of the locals and expats that call Otres home and crossed paths with fellow travelers with the most interesting stories. Like Susanne and Shawn, a couple from BC who live and work at a fishing lodge, catching sturgeon for a living for part of the year and relaxing on the beaches of Cambodia for the remaining 5-6 months. Or Volvor and Nastia, a couple from the Ukraine who had been traveling across the globe for a year as nature photographers. And I will never forget our crew that tore up the town on St. Patrick's Day.

Meeting people and having those enthralling conversations ~ sometimes in broken English ~ are what really make a place special. Besides the delicious food, great service and amazing beachfront (the best on Otres I in my opinion!), it truly is the people that made Indigo on Otres so special. Thanks again to Vicky and Wil for all of your hospitality.
